Painting stolen by the Nazis surfaces in the Netherlands thanks to a man who was unaware he was a descendant of an SS general

A painting by the artist Toon Kelder (Rotterdam, 1894-1973), titled Portrait of a Young Woman, stolen by the Nazis from the renowned art dealer Jacques Goudstikker, has surfaced at the home of the granddaughter of Hendrik Alexander Seyffardt, a Dutch general who commanded the Netherlands Volunteer Legion during World War II, a Waffen-SS unit that fought on the Eastern Front. A descendant of Seyffardt, unaware of the relationship, made the painting’s existence public through Arthur Brand, nicknamed the “art detective.”

Trump’s attack on the International Criminal Court tests nations’ support for humanitarian justice

The political pressure exerted by the United States on the International Criminal Court (ICC), through sanctions imposed on eight of its judges and three prosecutors, as well as on the entities and NGOs that collaborate with them, is testing its very resilience. All individuals involved are carrying on with their work, even though the degree of interference from Washington goes so far as to prevent them from even using a credit card. For a court like this one, without its own police force, the only way to defend itself is through its legitimacy and the support of other countries.

The WHO and Spain agree that epidemiologists will inspect hantavirus‑hit cruise ship before deciding its destination

The World Health Organization (WHO) and Spain’s Ministry of Health have agreed that a team of epidemiologists will examine on Tuesday afternoon the condition of the 147 people on board the luxury cruise ship MV Hondius before deciding on the port where passengers will be allowed to disembark. The shipping company responsible for the vessel, which sails under the Dutch flag, is Oceanwide Expeditions.
