Vinton Cerf: ‘I refuse to take responsibility for those who abuse my beautiful internet’

Vinton Cerf is the most elegant man in the office. He wears an impeccable three-piece wool suit and proudly displays gold cufflinks, which depict the solar system. At 82, he looks like a character from one of Amor Towles’ novels: a gentleman with distinguished style. With his lively eyes and neatly trimmed white beard, no one would guess that he’s one of the most important computer scientists in contemporary history.

Trump discloses stock market investments that fuel concerns about conflict of interest

U.S. President Donald Trump has been investing in the stock market while leading the country. He has a vast portfolio of hotels, golf courses, and luxury residential properties bearing his name, valued at more than $6 billion. But he also has a significant stock portfolio that he continued to grow during the first quarter, according to the extensive report containing his financial disclosure, released Thursday night by the Office of Government Ethics. A White House spokesperson maintains that the president does not make decisions about the investment process, which is managed by advisers. They explain that independent financial managers traded on his behalf using programs that track recognized indices.

US arrests nine people and seizes nearly three tons of cocaine in an operation near Colombia

The United States continues its anti-drug trafficking operation in the Caribbean and the eastern Pacific. While the military maintains its strategy of bombing suspected drug-running boats, the Coast Guard is opting for more traditional operations to intercept vessels. On May 8, the Coast Guard cutter Tahoma interdicted three vessels suspected of drug smuggling near Colombian waters, and carrying approximately 6,085 pounds (2,760 kilograms) of cocaine valued at $45.8 million, according to a statement from U.S. Southern Command. Agents arrested nine people who have been turned over to U.S. authorities.

Trump proposes suspending the gasoline tax to avoid a political crisis over fuel prices

Gasoline has become Donald Trump’s Achilles’ heel. Fuel prices are a matter of national concern in a country where citizens often commute long distances to work and where cars, with their larger engines, tend to consume more fuel than elsewhere. The war in Iran has driven up oil prices, and the tension in the energy markets has spilled over to the pumps, where gasoline has become more than 50% more expensive since the start of the conflict. Against this backdrop, the U.S. president announced this week that he will propose temporarily suspending the federal gasoline tax. The measure has been described by members of the Democratic opposition as a publicity stunt to divert attention from the rising cost of living for Americans. Other legislators from both parties support the proposal to ease the financial burden on citizens.
