Prince William wants AI to spot homelessness in the UK before it happens

Malay Mail

LONDON, June 11 β€” Homelessness in the UK is β€œentirely preventable” thanks to AI-supported technology, Prince William told the London Tech Week conference yesterday.

The heir to the British throne spoke as his homeless charity, Homewards, launched the Homelessness Data Lab β€” a national collaboration it said can improve how data and technology flag β€œclear warning signs long before” someone loses their home.

This could involve the sharing of personal data on an individual’s finances, welfare benefits and health between different bodies, prompting some cautionary comments elsewhere at London Tech Week surrounding data privacy.

β€œHomelessness is not inevitable, it is entirely preventable, it is predictable,” William said during a panel discussion.

The prince said β€œdata and the technology” can be used β€œto keep people in their homes, their jobs, their communities, families, at school”.

β€œIn life, prevention is better than the cure,” the royal told a packed conference hall.

Homewards notes that there are more than 430,000 people in the UK experiencing homelessness, half of whom are children.

Data privacyΒ

Dan Hughes, a trustee of the property sector charity LandAid that is partnering with Homewards to deliver the data lab, cautioned that data privacy needed to be respected while seeking to tackle homelessness with the help of tech.

β€œWe can throw huge amounts of data at solving this, but a lot of it is about individuals and people,” he told a separate London Tech Week event yesterday.

β€œWe need to make sure that we take best practice on personal data and how we can leverage that information without risking privacy.”

Zahra Bahrololoumi, chief executive of Salesforce UK and Ireland, a tech company also involved with the data lab, said β€œAI will help... identify the interventions that will actually work” in preventing homelessness.

β€œOur mission is to reduce the administrative burden on frontline workers,” she said sat alongside William.

β€œWe are applying AI tooling... (that) will enable the frontline worker to focus on the individuals and families that need the support the most,” she added. β€” AFP

KUCHING, June 13 β€” A toddler aged around three-years-old was found alone and crying for help by the roadside in Taman Berlian, Kota Samarahan.

See Hua News Daily reported that the girl was discovered at around 2am today by some college students who were having their late-night meal at a coffeeshop in the area.

The child has since been taken to Samarahan police station before being sent to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) emergency unit for a medical check-up. She is currently under observation.

Samarahan district police acting chief DSP Barry William has confirmed the incident, saying that an investigation has been launched to determine how the girl ended up by the main road.

The authorities have also identified the child’s family members, and inquiries are ongoing.

At about 2.10am, the female college student had just finished her late-night meal at a cafΓ© in the Taman Berlian residential area.

While she and a friend were riding a motorcycle home, they noticed a small child gesturing to them from the side of the road.

Unsure whether what they had seen was actually a child, they turned back to check and confirmed it was a young girl holding a feeding bottle.

The girl was crying for her mother and was carrying a blue towel and a small beaded basket. β€” The Borneo Post
