Vice President JD Vance is pressing federal prosecutors to investigate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and state Attorney General Keith Ellison over allegations they failed to stop widespread social services fraud.

"We are going to make him permanent attorney general," President Donald Trump said at a Rose Garden event.

A person familiar with the matter said the probe’s actual focus was on a non-profit backed by LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman that had helped fund the writer’s civil litigation against the US president.

The potential retreat is a recognition of the legal setbacks the fund has encountered since it was announced two weeks ago.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche is set to return to Capitol Hill on Tuesday after the Trump administration signaled it was pausing contentious plans to move forward with a nearly $1.8 billion fund that could compensate allies of President Donald Trump who believe they have been unjustly investigated and prosecuted.
