Falta re-poll: Double-voting claim puts Bengal’s voter list under scrutiny

21 May 2026 at 15:22

Serious questions over voter list discrepancies and Bengal’s voter verification process overshadowed the re-poll in West Bengal’s Falta Assembly constituency on Thursday, after one individual publicly claimed to have voted in two separate constituencies.

The Election Commission had ordered a complete re-poll across all 285 booths in Falta following allegations of vote-rigging and electoral irregularities during the earlier phase of polling. While the exercise recorded a massive 86.11 per cent turnout amid heavy security deployment, attention increasingly shifted to allegations exposing possible loopholes in the maintenance of electoral rolls.

At the centre of the controversy is Joy Saha, a former Falta resident who shifted to Diamond Harbour nearly a decade ago. Saha claimed that despite officially submitting his SIR form in Diamond Harbour and voting there during the 2026 Assembly elections, his name continued to appear on the voter list in ward no. 188 in Falta.

Standing outside a polling booth, Saha alleged that local booth-level officers (BLOs) had retained his name in Falta under the influence of former Trinamool Congress candidate Jahangir Khan.

“This is the first time in fifteen years that I have been able to cast my own vote in Falta,” Saha said. “Earlier, someone from Jahangir’s camp would allegedly cast the vote in my name. I already voted in Diamond Harbour during the Assembly elections, and today I voted here again because the election is finally free and fair.”

The admission has triggered sharp political reactions and renewed scrutiny of Bengal’s electoral roll management and SIR process.

Voter Joy Saha speaks to media

Political observers argued that the episode points to potentially serious flaws in voter verification. “One individual voting in two separate constituencies points towards deep administrative loopholes. It raises uncomfortable questions about how electoral rolls are being maintained,” a political analyst remarked.

The controversy comes against the backdrop of a re-poll itself ordered because of alleged electoral irregularities.

Heavy deployment of police and Central forces was seen throughout Falta, with security personnel patrolling villages and sensitive areas since dawn. Large queues formed outside polling stations across the constituency, while security personnel reportedly conducted door-to-door outreach in some areas, assuring residents that they could vote without fear or intimidation.

Even the area surrounding Jahangir Khan’s residence in Srirampur village remained under heavy guard. Khan, however, stayed away from the re-poll. His wife Rezina Bibi cast her vote at Srirampur Primary School under Booth No. 190 of Belsingh II Gram Panchayat.

Khan had dramatically withdrawn from the election two days before polling, reshaping the contest in Falta. During a press conference earlier this week, the former Trinamool candidate — popularly known as 'Pushpa' among supporters in a nod to the smash hit Telugu film of the same name — said he was stepping aside in the interest of Falta’s development.

His withdrawal shocked political circles, given his reputation as one of the closest grassroots organisers linked to Trinamool MP and general-secretary Abhishek Banerjee in the Diamond Harbour belt.

Following Khan’s exit, the BJP claimed the contest had effectively tilted in its favour. BJP candidate Debangshu Panda said the re-poll had enabled ordinary voters to participate freely. “People came out without fear today. Fair polling has ensured that the real public mandate will emerge,” Panda said. “Victory is now assured because this election was conducted properly.”

But beyond turnout figures and political claims, the double-voting allegation has intensified debate over the integrity of Bengal’s voter management system.

For years, Falta has been viewed as a Trinamool stronghold within Banerjee’s parliamentary constituency. Yet Thursday’s developments shifted attention away from purely electoral outcomes to broader concerns over how voter lists are maintained, verified and updated.

The Falta re-poll has thus emerged not only as a test of Bengal’s changing political climate and election monitoring mechanisms, but also of the credibility of the state’s voter verification framework itself.

CPI(M) says TMC 'melting faster than ice', eyes opposition space in Bengal

23 May 2026 at 06:05

Claiming that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is “melting faster than ice” in the summer heat, the CPI(M) has expressed confidence that it can occupy the opposition space in BJP-ruled West Bengal vacated by the Mamata Banerjee-led party.

CPI(M) West Bengal state secretary Mohammed Salim said the Left, especially his party, was already at the “forefront” of confronting its ideological adversaries, the RSS and BJP, in the state. “And now, since the Trinamool Congress is melting faster than ice in this heat, it is our task now not only theoretically but also practically to be the primary opposition to the BJP in West Bengal,” Salim told PTI in an interview.

“It is difficult but not impossible to retrieve the Left ecosystem in West Bengal and to be at the forefront of the people's struggles for their democratic and Constitutional rights,” he said.

Salim asserted that not only the CPI(M) but also the people of West Bengal were hopeful that the CPI(M)-led Left Front would take over the opposition mantle from the TMC. He alleged that over 15 years of TMC rule, marked by the use of “police and goons”, had created conditions that allowed the RSS to expand its influence in rural Bengal.

The CPI(M) has repeatedly accused the TMC and BJP of fostering a political binary centred around religion to sideline the Left and other opposition forces in the state.

Arguing that the TMC was disintegrating after its poor showing in the recently concluded assembly elections, Salim said the Left parties would step in to fill the political vacuum.

The TMC, led by Mamata Banerjee, had ended the Left Front’s uninterrupted 34-year rule in West Bengal in 2011, riding on anti-land acquisition movements in Singur and Nandigram.

Ironically, industrialisation, infrastructure development and job creation featured prominently in the 2026 Assembly election campaign agendas of both the Left and the BJP, alongside issues such as law and order, women’s safety, alleged “syndicate raj” and extortion.

Salim said Left parties and trade unions had already begun raising concerns over the displacement of hawkers evicted from various locations since the BJP came to power in the state, accusing the ruling party of targeting the livelihoods of the poorest sections. He said the CPI(M) would continue to campaign on issues including minority safety, Bengal’s cultural identity and communal harmony.

The CPI(M)-led Left Front, which governed West Bengal from 1977 to 2011, ended its prolonged electoral drought in the Assembly polls held on 23 and 29 April by winning the Domkal seat in Murshidabad district.

Despite securing just 4.45 per cent of the vote share in the recent elections, according to Election Commission data, the CPI(M) has said it remains undeterred. None of the other Left Front constituents crossed the one per cent mark.

In contrast, the Left Front had secured a 39 per cent vote share in 2011, with the CPI(M) alone accounting for 30 per cent. Its vote share had dropped to 4.73 per cent in the 2021 Assembly elections.

While the Left Front allied with the All India Secular Front (AISF) and CPI(ML) Liberation in this election, the Congress contested alone in all 294 constituencies. The Congress won two seats, while AISF retained Bhangar.

CJP warns of indefinite sit-in from 20 Jun, takes anti-Pradhan stir nationwide

10 June 2026 at 12:31

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), the youth-led movement that gained national attention following its protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar last week, on Wednesday announced a nationwide agitation demanding the resignation of Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan over a series of controversies surrounding competitive examinations and school assessments.

In a statement, the organisation said it would launch protests in multiple cities beginning with Pune on 11 June, followed by demonstrations in Lucknow, Amritsar, Bengaluru, Jaipur and Hyderabad. It also warned that if the government failed to act on its demand for Pradhan's resignation, supporters would gather at Jantar Mantar on 20 June for an indefinite sit-in.

"The Education Minister has failed to take responsibility for repeated failures in the examination system. Accountability must begin at the top," the group said, reiterating its demand that Pradhan step down.

The CJP argued that recurring controversies in the education sector had affected millions of students and families, turning what began as isolated grievances into a broader crisis of confidence in public institutions. It said the proposed agitation was intended to defend the integrity of India's education system and ensure students were not made to bear the cost of administrative failures.

We will demand the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan together.

The movement has drawn support from students angered by a succession of examination-related disputes, including the fallout from the NEET paper leak controversy, concerns over irregularities in recruitment examinations, and the recent uproar over errors and technical glitches affecting school (CBSE) and entrance examinations. Critics have accused the government of failing to address systemic weaknesses, while the Centre has maintained that corrective measures are being taken.

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, who returned from the United States to lead last week's demonstration, said the campaign would continue until accountability was fixed. In a post on social media, he announced that climate activist Sonam Wangchuk would join the movement's first stop in Pune.

The organisation emerged only weeks ago as a satirical social media initiative but has rapidly evolved into a wider youth mobilisation platform. Its first major street protest at Jantar Mantar on 6 June drew hundreds of students and young professionals despite heavy security arrangements. Protesters demanded Pradhan's resignation and highlighted concerns over examination irregularities, transparency and youth unemployment.

At the conclusion of that protest, CJP leaders issued a seven-day ultimatum to the government, warning that the movement would expand across the country if no action was taken. Wednesday's announcement signals the beginning of that next phase, with organisers hoping to convert online support into a sustained nationwide campaign.
