The Little Egret is a slender white heron distinguished by its black legs, yellow feet, and elegant breeding plumes. In Spain it is now a widespread and familiar wetland species, especially along the Mediterranean coast, the Atlantic marshes of Andalucía, the Ebro Delta, Doñana, the Balearic Islands, and numerous inland reservoirs and river systems. Little egrets thrive in shallow wetlands where they can stalk small fish, amphibians, crustaceans, and aquatic insects. Favoured habitats include salt marshes, tidal lagoons, rice fields, estuaries, fish ponds, riverbanks, flooded meadows, and coastal mudflats. Breeding colonies are often established in reedbeds, tamarisk scrub, or waterside trees, frequently alongside other herons and ibises.

The species has a broad distribution extending across southern Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and large parts of Asia and Oceania. Spain is particularly important as both a breeding and wintering stronghold in western Europe, with populations increasing significantly during recent decades thanks to legal protection and wetland conservation. Once largely confined to southern coastal marshes, little egrets have expanded northwards and inland throughout the Iberian Peninsula. In winter, Spanish wetlands host both resident birds and migrants arriving from more northerly parts of Europe. The species is especially associated with iconic Spanish wetlands such as Doñana National Park and the Ebro Delta, where large feeding flocks can often be observed in shallow lagoons and tidal channels.
