KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 — Injured national number one mixed doubles shuttler Toh Ee Wei is refusing to completely shut the door on a World Championship title defence in New Delhi and the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

Ee Wei, instead, said she is clinging to hope for a miracle despite facing a race against time to recover from a partial tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee.

“ I can’t confirm it now (World Championships and Asian Games participation). Maybe I need to pray to God to give me a miracle.

“As an athlete, of course I want to play, but the injury happened quite close to the tournament, so there is nothing much I can do,” she told reporters when met at the Akademi Badminton Malaysia, Bukit Kiara, here today.

Ee Wei also said she is still awaiting the magnetic resonance imaging assessment before deciding whether to proceed with surgery.

Recently, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) confirmed that Ee Wei suffered the injury during the Singapore Open 2026 quarter-finals.

The World Championships will be held in New Delhi from Aug 17-23, while the Asian Games are scheduled from Sept 19 to Oct 4.

Last year, Ee Wei and Chen Tang Jie created history as they became the first Malaysian mixed doubles pair to win the world title when they defeated China’s Jiang Zhen Bang-Wei Ya Xin 21-15, 21-14 in the final in Paris.

Despite trying to stay positive, Ee Wei admitted that the setback had taken an emotional toll on her.

“It’s okay; I think I need to move on and do my best for the recovery and return to the court.

“Everything happened for a reason. Maybe it’s time for me to rest. What I can do is to maintain discipline and follow the instructions of my coach and physiotherapist,” she said.

The 25-year-old has also encouraged Tang Jie to make the most of the opportunity while playing with her replacement for the time being.

Recently, national mixed doubles head coach Nova Widianto confirmed that Tang Jie will temporarily be paired with Clarissa San at the China Open in Jiangsu from July 21-26.

Ee Wei also expressed her gratitude to BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz and BAM Performance Committee chairman Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei for their support throughout her recovery process. — Bernama

Cheung Chung-yiu, 24; Cheung Chin-ming, 29; Chan Chun-hei, 22; and Chan Yuen-ming, 33, appeared at the District Court on Monday morning to enter their pleas.

The four defendants were not prosecuted when they were first arrested in 2019 and 2020. However, they were re-arrested in June 2024 and charged with rioting at PolyU between November 14, 2019 and November 20, 2019.

The events at the Hung Hom campus were one of the most violent episodes during the protests and unrest in 2019, with protesters setting fires with petrol bombs as they faced off against police.

A fifth defendant, Lai Chun-kit, was not present. He has not attended hearings since October 2024, and an arrest warrant has been issued for him, The Witness reported.

According to the prosecution, CCTV footage captured the defendants’ behaviour during the riot. Cheung Chung-yiu was seen moving barriers to block a footbridge, while Cheung Chin-ming and Chan Chun-hei were filmed taking containers from a laboratory.

Chan Yuen-ming was seen walking around the university campus and taking a large flask and two bottles with him.

Mitigation

The four defendants had initially planned to plead not guilty and go forward with a trial, the court heard, but later changed their minds.

During mitigation, Cheung Chung-yiu’s lawyer said that the defendant had gone abroad to study before he was re-arrested in 2024, while Cheung Chin-ming’s lawyer told the court that his client had supported victims of the Wang Fuk Court fire in its aftermath.

A legal representative for Chan Chun-hei said the defendant was only 16 at the time of the incident. He worked in the construction sector and became a father at 21, his lawyer said, adding that he regretted what he had done when he was younger.

Chan Yuen-ming’s lawyer said his client was tricked into working at a scam farm in Thailand, returning to Hong Kong in 2022 after his family paid a ransom. He suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, the lawyer said.

The lawyer added that Chan Yuen-ming was sentenced to 18 years and five months in prison for a drug trafficking offence, and that he stands to face a long time in prison.

The four defendants will be sentenced on June 8. Rioting is punishable by up to 10 years’ imprisonment, although jail terms handed down at the District Court are capped at seven years.

PAS stays in Perikatan for now despite Bersatu split, says party’s information chief

KUALA LUMPUR, Jun 9 — PAS leadership has remained tight-lipped over the party’s position in Perikatan Nasional (PN) following its announcement to end political cooperation with Bersatu.

However, PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari indicated that the party is, for now, still part of the coalition, Berita Harian reported today.

“I don’t want to comment further at this point. As of tonight, that is the situation (still in PN),” he told reporters after a special PAS central working committee meeting at the party headquarters here last night.

Earlier, PAS surprised the political landscape by announcing an immediate end to its political cooperation with Bersatu after reviewing the direction and status of ties between the two parties.

The decision was made during the special meeting chaired by PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang.

When asked whether the decision to sever ties with Bersatu was supported by the majority of senior party leadership, Ahmad Fadhli declined to elaborate on the proceedings.

“I cannot comment on the meeting process. No, it wasn’t heated… the air-conditioning was working well,” he said.

The meeting reportedly did not discuss PAS’s position within PN.

Separately, Perlis PN chairman Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim also declined to comment in detail, instead referring media to the official statement issued by the PAS president.

“The president’s statement did not touch on PN, so the position remains as before (still intact),” he said.

On the political situation in Perlis following the decision, Shahidan said he would issue a further statement once he receives instructions from the central leadership.

“I will issue a statement on Perlis once I receive further instructions from PAS central leadership,” he added.

KL police to station officers at 122 secondary schools for traffic law checks

KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 — Police officers will be deployed to 122 secondary schools across the capital under a new initiative aimed at improving road safety awareness and compliance with traffic laws among students, with authorities also planning driving licence checks and targeted drug screenings.

According to Utusan Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said students identified as requiring further assessment could be subjected to urine tests, adding that the programme would cover all secondary schools in the city, including private institutions.

He said the initiative would be carried out by officers from the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) and the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (JSJN), marking a more regular police presence in schools.

“If previously traffic police officers were rarely present in schools, they will now be stationed at schools to conduct checks on students, including verifying driving licences.

“They will also provide briefings and education on compliance with traffic laws,” he told reporters after the launch of the 2025 Traffic Awareness Advocacy Programme at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Alam Damai here yesterday.

Earlier in his speech, Fadil said the programme formed part of Kuala Lumpur police’s ongoing efforts to encourage greater respect for the law, beginning with adherence to traffic regulations.

He said Kuala Lumpur police had implemented Op Patuh Undang-undang (Op PUU) across its jurisdiction, including Putrajaya, since October 1 last year to foster a culture of respect for the law among students and the wider community.

Fadil said police recorded 41 arrests involving school, college and higher education institution students for reckless and dangerous driving offences under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 between January and May this year, down from 58 arrests during the same period last year.

He said the programme was intended not only to improve compliance with traffic regulations but also to encourage greater responsibility, discipline and integrity among young people.

Hong Kong denies link to UK national security case after trade officer convicted of spying on activists

HKETO case

The Hong Kong government has denied any link to the high-profile UK court case after its trade officer was convicted of spying on overseas activists.

“From the outset, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government has been clearly stating that the allegations in this case are absolutely not related to the HKSAR Government and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in London (London ETO), nor are we party to the case,” a government statement sent to the media on Friday morning read.

“We firmly oppose any unfounded allegations against the HKSAR Government and the London ETO.”

The statement was issued shortly after Bill Yuen, an office manager at the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in London, and former UK Border Force official Peter Wai were found guilty under Britain’s national security laws of assisting a foreign intelligence service.

Yuen and Wai – both British-Chinese dual nationals – were accused of spying on Hong Kong pro-democracy activists living in Britain.

Among those the pair were said to have surveilled was Nathan Law, who is wanted by national security police in Hong Kong with a bounty of HK$1,000,000.

Yuen and Wai were charged in May 2024 alongside a third person, UK immigration officer Matthew Trickett. A week after Trickett was charged, he was found dead in a suspected suicide.

According to a statement by UK counter-terrorism police, published after the guilty verdict on Thursday, Yuen had been receiving tasks from Hong Kong authorities and delegating them to Wai and Trickett.

Up to 14 years jail

Yuen and Wai were found guilty by a 10-2 jury verdict on Thursday. Wai was also found guilty of misconduct in public office in relation to abusing Home Office systems while working as a border control officer.

Yuen and Wai will be sentenced on a date yet to be determined. They face up to 14 years in jail.

According to the Friday statement, Hong Kong has 15 overseas ETOs in different cities, including the UK capital.

The London office maintains “close liaison with interlocutors in government, business, think tanks and various sectors to enhance the bilateral ties between Hong Kong and the UK in areas including trade, investment, and arts and culture,” it said.

After the guilty verdict, the UK said that it would summon the Chinese ambassador.

“We will continue to hold China to account and challenge them directly for actions which put the safety of people in our country at risk,” UK Security Minister Dan Jarvis said on Thursday. “That is why the Foreign Office will summon the Chinese Ambassador to make it clear activity like this was, and will always be, unacceptable on UK soil.”

In a statement issued the same day, the Chinese embassy in London condemned the verdict, saying that the UK had manipulated the judicial process as part of its “political move.”

“Its sole purpose is to embolden those anti-China elements who are hiding in the UK and bent on destabilising Hong Kong, and to smear the Chinese government and the Hong Kong SAR government,” it said.

Buenos Aires, Argentina – “We are the voice of those who no longer have one,” read the slogan plastered on signs across downtown Buenos Aires last Thursday, June 3.

Thousands gathered outside the National Congress to mark the 11th anniversary of Ni Una Menos, a movement that emerged after the 2015 murder of 14-year-old Chiara Páez and went on to reshape Argentina’s debate over gender violence while inspiring similar mobilizations across Latin America.

Purple scarves, green handkerchiefs and photographs of victims filled the streets on Wednesday as demonstrators demanded justice for women killed in acts of gender violence. This year’s march was largely shaped by the femicide of Agostina Vega, a 14-year-old girl in Córdoba, whose case dominated national headlines in the days leading up to the demonstration and became a symbol of public outrage.

The case sparked criticism of Argentina’s justice system and prompted calls for the resignation of judicial and government officials over alleged failures to protect the teenager.

Demonstrators also highlighted the recent murders of Dulce Candia, 17, in the northern province of Misiones; and Noelia Romero, 30, in a Buenos Aires suburb, whose names echoed throughout the protest.

“This case encapsulates the institutional violence that the State subjects us to,” organizers from Ni Una Menos said in a statement read during the main rally.

The statement was read by actress and gender rights activist Thelma Fardin, whose case became a landmark moment in Argentina’s #MeToo movement. “Don’t talk about me, stop killing us,” she said to the crowd that included women of all ages, political leaders and relatives of femicide victims. Earlier this year, Brazil’s Supreme Court upheld the conviction of Argentine actor Juan Darthés for sexually abusing Fardin during a tour in Nicaragua in 2009, bringing to a close one of the country’s most closely followed gender violence cases.

As demonstrators advanced through the city center, banners carried messages such as “No woman should have to learn how to survive living in the place she belongs,” “May freedom not be a promise but a reality,” and “Feminist rebellion against fascism.”

Debate over cuts to gender programs

Alongside demands for justice, many protesters also linked gender violence to Argentina’s economic situation. One of the most visible slogans read “We want to be alive, free… and debt-free” (“Vivas, libres y desendeudadas nos queremos”), a variation of the movement’s traditional slogan “Vivas y libres nos queremos” (“We want to be alive and free”). Organizers said the addition reflected concerns about the impact of President Javier Milei’s austerity policies on women and vulnerable communities.

The mobilization comes as feminist organizations and Milei’s government offer sharply different assessments of the situation facing women in Argentina.

According to Ahora Que Sí Nos Ven, an Argentine feminist observatory that monitors femicides and gender-based violence, a woman is killed every 31 hours in the country. The organization recorded 99 victims of gender-related killings between January and May this year and has documented more than 3,200 such cases since the first Ni Una Menos march in 2015.

For organizers, the anniversary has become not only a call against femicides but also a protest against what they describe as the dismantling of gender policies under Milei’s administration.

Activists pointed to reductions in funding for gender-based violence programs. According to an analysis by Argentine fact-checking organization Chequeado, inflation-adjusted spending on eight gender-related programs fell by nearly 95% between 2023 and 2025. Among the most affected were a nationwide hotline for victims of gender violence and a program which provides financial assistance to women at risk. Both saw their budgets fall by nearly 100% in real terms during the period.

According to Chequeado, six of the eight programs analyzed were either eliminated or absorbed into broader initiatives under the Human Capital and Justice ministries.

But the Milei administration has defended the restructuring, arguing that several programs were inefficient or redundant.

Government officials have also challenged the activists’ interpretation of the data. Senator Patricia Bullrich, from Milei’s La Libertad Avanza, highlighted what she described as a decline in femicides since Milei took office.

“I know that behind every statistic there are families, and for those families that number means everything,” Bullrich wrote on social media during the mobilization. “But the data reflects a reality: since Javier Milei took office, we have reduced femicides by 25%, strengthened the prison system and created a DNA registry for convicted rapists.”

Bullrich added that “the feminism I defend is the one that protects women,” reflecting the administration’s argument that public security measures, rather than gender-focused institutions, have driven improvements in the statistics.

According to a report released by Argentina’s Supreme Court, 200 direct victims of femicide were recorded in 2025, down 12.3% from the previous year and the lowest annual figure since 2017. The judiciary’s National Femicide Registry estimated that one woman was killed every 44 hours last year.

As the demonstration came to an end, participants raised photographs of victims toward Congress while organizers read aloud the names of women killed over the past year. Eleven years after the first Ni Una Menos march, demonstrators argued that the central demand remains unchanged: ensuring that no woman becomes the next name added to the list.
