With a buttery whole-grain shortbread crust and a crunchy, sweet-salty fruit-and-nut topping, these little gems are a perfect treat to share during the holidays. Dried cranberries are a good source of fiber (4g per 1/2 cup) but because they are naturally tart, many brands are loaded with added sugar (1). Fortunately, there are brands of dried cranberries that contain less added sugar or are sweetened with apple juice. Read labels carefully and you can cut the added sugar.

Cranberry-Walnut Bar Recipe
Ingredients
1 cup (142g) white whole-wheat flour
2 tbsp coconut sugar
3/4 tsp salt, divided
1/4 tsp baking powder
1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, cut into 1 inch cubes
1 tbsp vanilla extract
1 tbsp ice cold water
1/2 cup (118g) maple syrup
1/4 cup (57g) unsalted butter, melted
1 large egg
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup (113g) walnuts, chopped
1 cup (115g) dried cranberries, chopped
Directions
Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C). Line an 8-inch (20 cm) square baking pan with parchment paper, leaving a 2-inch overhang on two opposite sides to create a sling for easy removal.
To make the crust: In a food processor, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder. Pulse a few times to blend. Add the butter and pulse until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs, with butter pieces no larger than a lentil, about 20 pulses.
Add the vanilla extract and 1 tablespoon of water. Pulse 5 times, or just until the dough begins to clump together. The mixture should hold together easily when pressed between your fingers. If it feels too dry, add more water, 1 teaspoon at a time, pulsing briefly after each addition.
Transfer the mixture to the prepared pan and press firmly into an even layer. Bake for about 20 minutes, or until the crust is lightly golden. Remove from the oven and set aside.
To make the filling:In a medium bowl, whisk together the maple syrup, melted butter, egg, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth. Stir in the chopped walnuts and dried cranberries.
Pour the filling evenly over the warm crust. Return the pan to the oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the filling is bubbly and the nuts are lightly browned.
Transfer the pan to a wire rack and let cool at room temperature for at least 1 hour. Use the parchment overhang to lift the bars out of the pan. Cut into squares before serving.

At this Japanese convenience store chain, big is an understatement.
It’s been a great few months for convenience store fans in Japan, with chains like 7-Eleven and Lawson upsizing a number of their products with special limited-time campaigns.
▼ Now, Family Mart is bringing joy to its customers with a “Giant All-Star Festival“.
With 14 items in the lineup, covering products like coffee, sweets and sandwiches, there’s something here for everyone. However, unlike 7-Eleven and Lawson, where products were upsized at no extra cost to customers, the products in Family Mart’s campaign come with higher price tags, so customers will want to be more discerning with their choices.
Here to help in that regard is our own discerning reporter P.K. Sanjun, who flatly says that the sandwiches, eclairs, and coffeejelly weren’t as impressive as he’d hoped. While they might resonate with other customers, for him the size upgrade wasn’t giant enough to make him do a double-take, which is the high bar he sets for campaigns like this one.
There were, however, two items in the range that did make P.K. do a double-take.
▼ The Big Financier…
▼ … and the Big Cookie.
These were two products P.K. didn’t mind paying extra for, as the sheer size of them made them seem like great value for money, even with the price increase. To give you an idea of how big the Big Financier is, P.K. says it’s about the size of an iPhone 16 Pro.
▼ P.K., modelling the financier phone.
Placing it next to the chain’s standard financier, P.K. had a hunch that the giant version was more than twice its size. Checking the website, he learned that the Big Financier is said to have 2.9 times the surface area of the standard version.
The official website also claims that the Big Cookie is about twice the weight of the chain’s regular chocolate macadamia cookie.
Sensing it was even larger, P.K. whipped out his scales to weigh both cookies. The regular chocolate macadamia cookie weighed in at 60 grams (2.1 ounces), while the large cookie was…
▼ …172 grams!
At almost three times the weight, the increase was way bigger than advertised, and with the price difference being 203 yen (US$1.27) for the regular version and 258 yen for the large, this was fantastic value for money.
▼ In Japan, giving customers more than they bargained for is colloquially known as gyaku sagi (“reversefraud“).
▼ The giant financier was another good deal, with the regular being 150 yen and the large 238 yen.
Compared to everything else in the range, the financier and cookie are outstanding in terms of both size and cost-effectiveness. The upgrade didn’t affect the quality either, as both were as delicious as their smaller versions.
These delicious cookies combine all the flavors you love in the buttery Greek dessert, packed into a healthy little oatmeal cookie. While honey counts as added sugar, it’s not refined. Still, it’s important to consume it in moderation. Our RD recommends 25g or less of added sugar per day so with only 5g added sugar these cookies make a perfect dessert that can fit into a healthy meal plan (1).

Honey-Sweetened Baklava Cookies
Ingredients
1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter
1/2 cup (160g) honey
1/2 cup (65g) walnuts, chopped
1/2 cup (60g) pistachios, shelled and chopped
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup (60g) whole-wheat pastry flour or whole-wheat flour
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/2 cups (148g) oats
Directions
Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside. Melt the butter in a large sauté pan over medium-low heat. Continue to cook, swirling pan occasionally, until the foam subsides and the butter begins to turn golden brown and smells nutty, about 3 minutes.
Add the honey, walnuts, pistachios, cinnamon, salt and cloves and bring to a simmer. Cook, stirring constantly, until syrupy, about 2 minutes. Pour into a large mixing bowl and set aside to cool to room temperature, about 30 minutes.
Add the egg and vanilla to the honey mixture and stir to combine. Add the flour and baking soda and stir until no traces of flour remain. Add the oats, stirring to combine. The mixture will be very stiff.
Drop the batter by rounded tablespoonfuls 2 inches (5cm) apart on the prepared baking sheets. Bake, rotating baking sheets from top to bottom halfway through baking, until crispy on the edges and golden brown, 14–18 minutes, watching carefully during the last few minutes to make sure the cookies aren’t burning. Transfer to a wire cooling rack and let cool. Store in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
Kayanoya’s Satoyama Cookies give you four flavors for a snack session unlike any other.
The other day, we found ourselves thinking “We want to eat some cookies.” In and of itself, that’s not at all an unusual condition for us to be in, but on this day we wanted specifically to eat some Kayanoya cookies.
Kayanoya is a company that was founded all the way back in 1893, and as you might expect from that, they make use of some characteristically Japanese ingredients in their cookies, such as matcha green tea and black sesame. Kayanoya isn’t a dedicated confectioner, though. They’re primarily a producer of dashi, Japanese soup stock, and yes, they have dashi cookies too!
▼ Some Kayanoya shops even have a counter where you can get cups of piping hot dashi soup (だしスープ).
The dashi cookies are part of the four-flavor Satoyama Cookieset. Satoyama is a Japanese word referring to farmlands adjacent to foothills and forests, and that retro rural community aesthetic is present on the box lid.
The 16 cookies inside are arranged neatly in their own little compartments, and we started our tasting with the matcha and black sesame cookies.
Fancy Japanese cookies tend to be crisp and a little crumbly in their texture, and that’s true of Kayanoya’s. Thankfully, they go easy on the sugar in the recipe, leaving the matcha and black sesame plenty of room to be the stars in their cookies’ flavor profiles, and they’re both delicious, in a sophisticated way.
Now, though, it was time for things to start getting unusual, and even before we got to the dashi cookie, we had a shichimi one to try.
Shichimi is a piquant allspice whose name translates literally to “seven flavors.” The exact mix of ingredients varies from maker to maker, but red chili powder is always present, and sesame and sansho, an aromatic type of Japanese pepper with bitter notes, are also regularly members of the shichimi team.
▼ Somewhat confusingly, Kayanoya’s shichimi cookies have black sesame sprinkled on top of them, while the black sesame cookies do not.
Since this is still a cookie, we wondered if Kayanoya would perhaps use just a touch of shichimi for a little spicy accent to an otherwise sweet flavor. But nope, just like with their matcha and black sesame cookies, the taste is crafted so that you really do taste shichimi more than anything else, and this is an honestly spicy cookie that little kids probably won’t enjoy, but adults with adventurous palates will.
And finally, we come to the dashi cookie.
Dashi is a bit of a catchall culinary term, and most commonly indicates a type of fish broth that makes heavy use of bonito stock. However, while Kayanoya does make fish-based dashi, for their dashi cookies they instead use their vegetable dashi, which is fish-free and instead made with onion, carrot, cabbage, celery, and garlic.
By this point, we knew that the primary flavor of the vegetable dashi cookie was going to be dashi, but which of those five veggies would come to the forefront? We got our answer immediately, as we took a bite and immediately had the sensation of onion firing up our taste receptors.
Now, “onion cookie” might sounds like a cruel prank you’d play on an unsuspecting person who’s craving something sweet, but since we knew ahead of time that it was going to taste like vegetable dashi, the flavor wasn’t bad at all. It actually reminded us of the consommé flavor that’s the standard for Japanese potato chips, except here the supporting flavor underneath it is the buttery baked cookie dough, not an oily fried chip.
With their combination of unique flavors and high quality, the Satoyama Cookie set (which is priced at 2,268 yen [US$15]) is proving to be a hit. It was actually all sold out when we first swung by a Kayanoya store to pick some up, but that was right before Mother’s Day so it was a prime gift-buying weekend, so they should be easier to find now.
