William Goldman’s 1985 novel Heat had the makings of a gritty crime thriller destined to be adapted for the big screen with its exploration of the moody life of a former mercenary-turned-bodyguard, plagued by a gambling addiction and a desire to flee Las Vegas. Goldman’s novel was adapted twice — first, in the 1986 thriller of the same name starring Burt Reynolds under the direction of Dick Richards, and then the 2015 version, called Wild Card, starring Jason Statham by director Simon West.

If you're looking for some action, but you don't want to leave the comfort of your own couch, then a mezze of Jason Statham movies currently in the streaming rotation is your best port of call. From delivering plenty of laughs in the espionage satire Spy and defining a genre of British gangster flicks in Snatch, to telling a heist story in reverse in Wrath of Man and delivering a perfect shot of adrenaline in The Beekeeper, Statham's performances are some of the best for action fans.

There's no way to describe this two-parter, because it is utterly deranged. It is the absolute best and worst of cinema at the same time, and it gave one of the finest action stars of his generation the chance to let loose and show just how weird and demented he could actually be. The result was two immensely entertaining movies that saw one man have a very bad day and do his best to stay alive despite the most hilariously overwhelming odds.

When you're a big action star on a hot streak, you have to realize that not every film you make is going to connect with viewers, or even be particularly memorable. Even the greats have an off day, and that's what happened to one of the most prolific and successful action stars of the 21st century when he met a script he couldn't save.

Mechanic: Resurrection is the penultimate example of the iconic roles Jason Statham has built the entirety of his career on. As always, he portrays a morally grey lead — this time, though, recently scorned by a former enemy, who is out for blood at any cost. Lionsgate’s classic assassin flick is dominating the streaming charts a decade later, proving yet again that Statham is perhaps the only actor who can play the exact same role and not only get away with it but also continually dominate.

Last year, The Cut announced in an article written by journalist Cat Zhang that being bald was — finally — cool. “Just when it became normal to drop five figures on a thicker hairline, a new cultural vanguard rose up and said: “Fuck it, we bald,’” she asserted.

Statham will have a chance at redemption this August for another action thriller, Mutiny, which co-stars Annabelle Wallis (Peaky Blinders). Ayer is not returning to direct The Beekeeper 2 due to a prior commitment to helm Heart of the Beast, an action thriller starring Brad Pitt and J.K. Simmons.
